Russian flagship airline Aeroflot will cancel service to Damascus on August 6 due to business reasons, an Aeroflot official said on Monday.

"Yes, we will close this route because of commercial reasons," the official told Prime news agency, adding that flights to the Syrian capital were unprofitable.

The United Nations, quoting Syrian rights activists, says some 16,000 people have died in Syria since the start of the now almost 18-month revolt against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Aeroflot and Syrian Air provide direct flights between Moscow and Damascus, but starting from August passengers will have to use other airlines and make one or two layovers to reach the Syrian capital from Moscow.
