U.S. pop star Whitney Houston died on Saturday afternoon in Los Angeles at the age of 48, Western media agencies reported.

A member of the singer’s entourage found Houston unresponsive in her room in Beverly Hilton hotel and called security, the TMZ.com celebrity news web site reported citing sources.

Paramedics arrived at the scene and performed CPR but it did not bring any results and Houston, who battled drug addiction for many years, was officially pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m. local time (23:55 GMT).

The cause of her death is unknown.

Houston is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as “the most awarded female artist of all time.” During her singing career, which started when she was 11, Houston won six Grammy Awards, 15 Billboard Music Awards, 21 American Music Awards, two Emmy Awards, and many other music prizes.

She was also known as an actress, particularly for starring opposite Kevin Costner in the 1992 box-office smash The Bodyguard. Her songs from the movie, in which she played a singer, were also worldwide hits.
