Russian and Norwegian warships will call at the port of Severomorsk in northern Russia on Saturday as they complete the Pomor-2010 naval exercises.

Russian and Norwegian warships will call at the port of Severomorsk in northern Russia on Saturday as they complete Pomor-2010 naval exercises, a spokesman for the Russian Northern Fleet said.

The Russian Northern Fleet and the Norwegian Navy conducted joint drills between June 7 and 11 in the Barents and Norwegian Seas.

"The crews of the warships completed a set of tasks on communications, navigation, maneuvering and coordinated firing at various targets," Vadim Serga said.

The two warships to call at the port of Severomorsk, which is the headquarters of the Russian Northern Fleet, are Russia's Severomorsk destroyer and Norway's guided missile frigate Otto Sverdrup.

The Norwegian Navy was represented at the drills by the Otto Sverdrup, Coast Guard ship Nordkapp, the Orion patrol aircraft, F-16 fighters and Lynx helicopters, while Russia's Northern Fleet was represented by the Severomorsk, Il-38 ASW aircraft, Su-33 fighters and a Ka-27 naval helicopter.

The four-stage exercise included anti-submarine warfare drills, anti-piracy operations, and search-and-rescue missions.

Intensive combat training and a continued presence in the world's oceans are priorities for the Russian Navy.

In the second half of 2010, Russian warships will take part in a number of large-scale naval drills, continue patrolling the pirate-infested waters off the Somali coast and make about 50 foreign port calls.
