The international jury of the 53rd annual World Press Photo Contest has selected a photo by Italian photographer Pietro Masturzo as the World Press Photo of the Year 2009. The picture depicts women shouting in protest from a rooftop in Tehran. The photograph was taken on June 24, at the height of unrest provoked by the announcement of the results of the June 12 presidential election. The opposition held protest rallies by day, which often developed into open revolt and clashes with police. At night, protesters shouted their dissent from rooftops and balconies.
