ROSTOV-ON-DON, May 2 (RIA Novosti) - One person died and around 100 people were left homeless after a fire erupted overnight in a four-storey apartment block in central Rostov-on-Don, south Russia, a local emergencies spokesman said Friday.

"As a result, the house was virtually burnt to the ground, and a shop and real estate firm located on its first and second floors were damaged," a spokesman for a local emergency service said.

The fire spread over an area of 2,000 square meters. A total of 18 fire engines and 100 rescuers were involved in the operation. The fire was put out by 10.38 a.m. Moscow time on Friday.

Later rescuers discovered the charred remains of a body, believed to be female, in the building's ashes.
