A court in the Siberian city of Irkutsk has sentenced a woman driver to three years in jail to begin in 2024 after finding her guilty of killing one sister and leaving the other physically handicapped, a court spokesman said on Tuesday.

A court in the Siberian city of Irkutsk has sentenced a woman driver to three years in jail to begin in 2024 after finding her guilty of killing one sister and leaving the other physically handicapped, a court spokesman said on Tuesday.

The driver's sentence was postponed until her newly-born child reaches the age of 14.

Two sisters, Yulia and Elena Pyatkova, were walking down the sidewalk near Baikal State University in December 2009 when Anna Shavenkova slammed into the girls, throwing them several meters and then crashed into one of the wings of the university.

The accident was caught on camera and shows Shavenkova getting out of her car after striking the girls. The driver did not run to the aid of the victims, but instead walked around the car to check out the damage done to her vehicle.

Passers-by called an ambulance; however, Yulia died at the scene. Her sister was left physically handicapped.

"Since the guilty [party] recently gave birth to a child, Shavenkova's sentence will be postponed until the child turns 14, that is until March 2024," the court spokesman said.

The case has caused much social outcry.
