The two-day meeting of the Valdai Club took place far away from Moscow, in Yakutia. As a joint project of the Council for Foreign and Defense Policy and RIA Novosti, since 2004, brainstorming sessions between Western experts on Russia and their Russian colleagues have been held every year in early September in various Russian cities.

The sixth session of the Valdai International Discussion Club
The sixth session of the Valdai Club – a gathering of the world’s leading experts on Russia, who meet every year under the auspices of RIA Novosti and the Russian Council on Foreign and Defense Policy – took place in Yakutsk, Eastern Siberia. At this year’s session, entitled “Russia and the West – Back to the Future”, the club members discussed the dangers of slipping back to a new Cold War, as well as the new challenges for Russia’s cooperation and integration with the West. Sessions took place both in Yakutsk and in Moscow and included meetings with the country’s top politicians, officials and analysts.
