Azerbaijani court approves scrapping limit on presidential terms

BAKU, December 24 (RIA Novosti) - Azerbaijan's Constitutional Court has approved amendments to the Constitution which will allow the president to be elected an infinite number of times, the court chairman said on Wednesday.

Farkhad Abdullayev said that the Constitutional Court had ruled that the bill to extend presidential term limits was not in breach of Azerbaijani law, and "a referendum could be held."

Judges said during the court debate that the bill, submitted by the country's parliament, would improve human rights for Azerbaijani citizens, develop democracy in the country and strengthen the Constitution.

On December 26, parliament is expected to set a date for a national referendum to approve or reject the Constitutional amendments.

The Constitutional changes include suspending presidential and parliamentary elections in times of war, making municipal authorities accountable to parliament and renaming the National Bank the Central Bank.

Ilham Aliyev took over as president when his father, Heydar, stepped down in 2003, subsequently winning 76.84% of the vote in that year's presidential election. In October Aliyev received 88.73% of the vote to win a second five-year term as president.
