The crash that killed 158 people on board an Air India Express plane on Saturday at an airport in south India's Mangalore may have been caused by pilot error, national media reports said, citing a regional official.

The unnamed representative of the state of Karnataka, of which Mangalore is the chief port city, said that the plane first landed before flying off the runway at "a high speed."

Other media reports say flames were visible on the plane's left wing just before the crash, which eight people survived.

No official statement on the cause of the accident has yet been released.

Earlier reports said the pilot of the plane was a Russian national, but media outlets in India are now stating that the two pilots were from India and Serbia.

NDTV named the pilot as "Z Glucia, a Serbian national" and "first officer Capt S S Ahluwalia."

The Russian embassy in India has said there were no Russian citizens on board.
