CAIRO, July 1 (RIA Novosti) – The Egyptian army delivered an ultimatum to President Mohamed Morsi asking him to meet the people’s demands and resolve huge protests against his rule or face an intervention within 48 hours, Al Jazeera reported Monday.

The statement, which was also addressed to opposition groups, said “the armed forces repeat their call for the people's demands to be met and give everyone 48 hours as a last chance.”

The statement added that if the situation were not resolved within 48 hours the armed forces would have “to announce a road map for the future and the steps for overseeing its implementation, with participation of all patriotic and sincere parties and movements.”

Millions of protesters flooded the streets of Egyptian cities to demand the ouster of President Morsi on Sunday, which marked the first anniversary of his office.

Hundreds of thousands of protesters gathered outside the presidential palace in Cairo's Heliopolis district and in Tahrir Square, the focus of the 2011 revolution and the key venue of many opposition rallies.

According to the Egyptian Health Ministry, at least 16 people were killed and over 600 injured across Egypt in clashes between Morsi’s supporters and his opponents on the night between Sunday and Monday.
